Library Circulation Policy
Our number one goal is to get books into students' hands! We'd rather lose a book than a reader so we will do whatever
possible to let students continue to borrow in the event of a lost or destroyed book. However, there comes a point
where we must also be good stewards of our materials. For this reason, students who have forgotten their books may still
borrow books from the reminder bookshelf. Overdue fines are not collected at OBES, but at the end of each six weeks notices will be sent out to students whose books are overdue. Books are overdue when they have been checked out and not renewed for over two weeks.
Students are expected to pay for books that have been lost, stolen, or irreparably damaged to the point other students can no longer enjoy it. If a student does not pay for the book, they will not receive their report card and can be withheld from special end of
year events. Can't pay for your lost book? Talk to the librarian for other options.
Students are responsible for items checked out on their accounts. Because grades 2-6 self check out and self check in, they must look at the screen for any irregularity and notify the librarian as soon as possible. For example, if they see anything they believe is incorrect
such as a book they returned, they should talk to the librarian. The librarian will help them investigate the occurrence and make a decision on next steps.
Kindergarten: - Students will be allowed to
check out 1 book at a time. They will be allowed to take
their book home if they and their parents have signed
a permission slip/contract about book care.
If the parents wish, kindergarten students can be allowed
to keep their book at school. Students will not be allowed to
check out another book until the previous book is
returned. Students are not limited to one
book per week and are encouraged to come back to the library
as often as possible to get new books. However, students
will not be allowed to check out additional books until they
have returned the previous one. Students in Kindergarten
will be allowed two books starting in January if they have shown
growth in responsibility.
Grades 1 - 6: Students in grades 1 - 6 will be
allowed to check out two books at a time. For first grade
only, one book must be within their reading
level, and the other book is a freebie.
Freebie books can be any book in the library
and are not restricted by A.R. level. Students are
encouraged to come back to the library as often as
possible to get new books. However, they will not be
allowed to check out more books until they have
returned the previous ones.
On some occasions, the librarian may allow students
a third book to check out. This is at the librarian's
discretion.
ULTRA Pass: Once they have earned a set number of
AR points, students will earn an ID tag called an ULTRA
pass which will allow them special privileges in the
library, including checking out a third book.
Faculty: Faculty are allowed to check out unlimited
materials for as long as needed. Faculty are not assessed
fines for lost books.
